The post that got me out of bed
March 12th, 2008 | by David |I bought myself an iPhone for Christmas and one of the sick habits I have is to go through Google Reader before I even get out of bed in the morning. I always have good stuff to read but this morning I almost jumped out of bed, all fired up to get the day started. What possibly could get me going like that? It wasn’t this news item - though for some people that probably could do it, rather it was a post from Venture Hacks titled "Half-Assed Startup: How do I start my company and keep my day job?".
You can read the post and see how much it rocks your world, but the points that completely stuck with me were
You need a co-founder and some cheerleaders. Usually when I share my ideas with people they like them, but I’ve never invited someone to be a part of it. Maybe its ego, maybe its selfishness, but I realized like a cinderblock to the forehead this morning that its the wrong approach. I instantly thought of a couple of people that I’ll be talking to today and sent one of them an email before writing this post.
Pick a day or two per week where you always work, ideally in the same room as your co-founders. I am going to work to have a local partners because I want that 2 AM late night session pushing out code or working on elevator pitches and that type of happiness has to be shared, right? If you’ve seen Into The Wild that was the realization right before he…well read the book or see the movie.
The other 5 points were excellent as well but those first to were just so obvious and so simple that I jumped out of bed sent an email off to a possible partner and will try to track down the other person today as well.
I made no real progress on any of my ideas in February and the first couple of weeks of March haven’t been much better. Time to change that.
